Spring hits Texas, trees bud and the bugs begin their crawling season.
It's not unlikely for Texans to see termites swarm their home. Sounds like a horror film? It can be if left unchecked.
You definitely don't want to see the damage inflicted after a swarm demolishes your walls or window sills.
This is a situation which is appalling at least and one you'll want to know is covered by your Grapevine home insurance policy.
Unfortunately, termite damage and the removal of them usually is not covered by a standard Texas home insurance policy. Vermin, insect or pest is usually excluded so if you aren't prepared for this, you will learn the hard way about the cost of remediation. However, there is some hope.
One provision exists for the scenario in that you have no idea about the presence of termites and they do what termites do best (eat the infrastructure of your home), then they could possibly cause a sudden collapse of your structure.
Sounds cartoonish? Believe us, it is real. If you didn't know they were there and doing damage, this would be covered by the sudden collapse portion of your policy. This would be a highly unlikely circumstance, however, it would be covered.
There is also a provision, also unlikely, that if termite damage caused a spark and eventual fire from eating the electrical line in your home, then coverage may apply due to the fire peril being covered on your policy.
Because your policy doesn't normally cover damage to your home due to insects and pests, it's a good idea to perform regular maintenance and spot checks of your home's condition, even in the nooks and crannies.
Your most valuable possession, the place you call home, should have proper protection.
